Sustainable Calgary is Recruiting New Board Members

Looking for a meaningful way to contribute to the future of our city? The Board of Sustainable Calgary is inviting nominations for upcoming board vacancies.

For more than 25 years, Sustainable Calgary has been reimagining how Calgary grows and thrives: tracking the city’s progress on sustainability while working alongside communities to pilot bold, precedent-setting ideas that make neighbourhoods healthier, more vibrant, and more beautiful. From child-centred street redesigns to public spaces that invite connection and nature back into daily life, our work blends research, creativity, and collaboration to show what’s possible - then turn those possibilities into built projects, policy and practice.

Our board, staff, and networks reflect a wide range of experiences and professions including designers, writers, artists, scientists, health specialists, engineers, and community leaders. We pride ourselves in having people from a wide array of backgrounds and we approach sustainability from all angles.

We are seeking board members who are passionate about Calgary’s future and excited to contribute their skills and perspective to a collaborative governance team. We value a diversity of lived and professional experience, and are particularly interested in applicants with expertise in finance, legal, communications, and fundraising.

What Board Members Do (at a glance)

Because of our excellent staff and contractors, board members provide strategic leadership and governance oversight, supporting the organization’s mission while remaining focused on governance rather than day-to-day operations. Responsibilities include:

  • Participating in board meetings and decision-making, including providing financial and operational oversight for the organization and our projects

  • Serving on and, in some cases, chairing a standing board committee alongside volunteers and other board members

  • Championing initiatives that align with Sustainable Calgary’s mission and vision

  • Acting as ambassadors for the organization and supporting staff where appropriate

Board service is estimated at approximately 5–7 hours per month, including board meetings, committee work, and light follow-up tasks. Board members are typically appointed for a two-year term beginning at our March AGM, in accordance with the organization’s by-laws.

A full description of board roles and responsibilities is available upon request.

We welcome applications from individuals who may be first-time board members, as well as those from equity-deserving communities, younger professionals, and people whose lived experience can help shape more inclusive, healthy city-building. Additionally, expertise in the areas of finance, legal, communications, and fundraising would complement our existing skillsets.

How to Apply

We are hosting two rounds of nominations:

  • Round 1: Applications due January 16, 2026

  • Round 2: Applications due March 13, 2026

Interested individuals are invited to submit:
