Help us build amazing school streets for kids, by kids

Hey friends of sustainable calgary!

We’re designing streets for kids with kids - and their ideas have pushed us beyond what we thought was possible. We have some of the funding we need, but we need your help to get their big ideas built!

There are a ton of ways you can contribute - from practical permitting fees to pretty planters. Check it out below.

Help us prototype a calm collector on Martindale Boulevard!

Martindale is a residential neighbourhood in North East Calgary, home to Manmeet Singh Bhullar and Ecole la Mosaique Schools. Martindale Boulevard is a busy collector road that runs through the neighbourhood past both schools. Speeding and illegal passing are a problem and make the walk to school feel unsafe, so the students wanted to make the area around their school safe and fun for everyone. Here’s how you can help:

Paint the pavement

$63 buys one can of paint to make streets and intersections pop!

Contribute to planters!

Add some greenery to the school street with planters that double as traffic calming

Seating

Help us build places for kids and caregivers to rest and connect! These little nesting boxes can be used as seating, taken apart, moved and re-used.

Help us prototype an Open Street in the Beltline!

The Beltline is one of the densest and most historic neighbourhoods in Calgary, and Connaught Elementary School and its 410 students occupy an entire block of the neighbourhood. Dangerous driving and illegal parking make the street feel unsafe for playing and walking to school, but the kids had some ideas about how to make it a safe place for everyone. Here’s how you can help:

Buy the street for a week!

$26 pays for the weekly permit to open 10th Street SW to people.

Be idle without the Idling

Moveable benches that give folks a place to rest and chat - seats can be moved around to create space for different types of events and gatherings!

Paint the pavement

$63 buys one can of paint to make streets pop! [6 needed total]

Planters

Add some greenery to the school street with planters that double as traffic calming.

Plants

$5 buys lavender, $10 buys native grasses.

Help us proptype an Active Alley in Meridian!

Meridian is an industrial area in North East Calgary that OBK Campus School and more than 500 students call home. OBK is a commuter school. Some students live within walking distance, but none of them walk or bike to get there. With 60% of the neighbourhood covered in parking lots, it wouldn’t be an easy thing to do. The students decided to activate the alley next the school - not just for themselves but for everyone in the community. Here’s how you can help:

Planters

Add some greenery to the school street with planters that double as traffic calming.

Botany plants lately? You can now!

$5 buys a lavender plant, $10 buys native grass.

Paint the pavement

$63 buys one can of paint to make streets pop! [9 needed]

Be idle without the Idling

Moveable benches that give folks a place to rest and chat - seats can be moved around to create space for different types of events and gatherings!

Ramps
